Where do I meet for my lesson?

For Private Lessons you will meet at the North end public parking lot of Stinson beach in front of the bathrooms. Your instructor will have all of your equipment with them

For Private lessons that have been previously discussed to meet in Bolinas, you will meet your coach at the Bolinas Tennis courts at the corner of Brighton and Park Ave.

For weekend Beginner Group lessons you will meet at Stinson Surf and Kayak, 3605 CA-1 Stinson beach, CA 94970.

Where should I park for my lesson? Can I park at the shop where we meet?

There is NO parking at Stinson Beach Surf and Kayak Shop.

For lessons in Stinson Beach please park in the NORTH end of the public lot and walk to the meeting location from there.

For Bolinas lessons park anywhere you find a spot on Brighton Ave.

How early should I arrive to ensure parking?

For Bolinas lessons, especially on weekends, you will need to plan to arrive AT LEAST 1/2 hour before your lesson to ensure finding a spot. Parking in Bolinas is all on the street.

For Stinson Beach lessons plan to arrive in Stinson Beach at least 1/2 hour before your lesson in the busy time of year (June-Sept).

If you booked an afternoon lesson in Stinson on a busy weekend you will need to plan to arrive in Stinson Beach before noon in order to ensure a parking place.

What days and times can I schedule a lesson?

All availability we have is on our site calendar, if it is not offered on the calendar we most likely do not have the availability.

Please do your best to schedule for the time slots on the calendar. However, if none of those work for you, you can always reach out and we will do our best to accommodate.

What is your cancellation policy?

For client cancellations we do not offer refunds. However, we do offer credit to go towards a future lesson. For full credit, clients must cancel 7 days before the lesson. If a client cancels prior to 24 hours but less than a week, we will give a 50% credit. If a client cancels within 24 hours of the lesson there will be no refund or credit. There is a 50.00 charge for any lessons that need to be rescheduled by the client.

If Marin Outdoor Adventure cancels due to surf conditions, weather, pandemic, fires, or any other reason we will offer credit to the client.

How do I determine what level I am?

Level 1- never surfed before

Level 2- surfed 3 or more times and can stand on white water wave

Level 3- can catch and ride own whitewater waves, ready to learn how to catch and ride unbroken waves

Level 4- paddling into catching unbroken waves and learning how to go down the line

Level 5- efficient surfer ready to take it to the next level!

What location and level should I choose for myself and my group?

For people who are progressing and have surfed a few times we suggest scheduling a Bolinas lesson. For first timers we suggest Stinson Beach.

What is the schedule for all ongoing lessons?

7 days a week, 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm both in Bolinas and Stinson. Additional options available upon request.

How long is my lesson?

All lessons are 1.5 hours long, however you should plan for a full 2 hours given parking, meeting your instructor and getting changed into your wetsuit.

How many people can be in my private lesson and what is the cost?

Private lessons are for up to 3 participants. You can purchase spots for additional surfers (if more than 3) while booking, for $50/person.

What is the ratio of student to coach?

Usually it is a 3:1 ratio, and. never more than 5:1.

How do I cancel or reschedule my lesson?

Cancellations must be made 24 hours before the start of the scheduled lesson.

If cancellations are made less than 24 hours in advance, you will be charged for that lesson. All cancellation policies can be seen below in the cancellation FAQ.

Is gear included with my lesson?

For beginner Group lessons you will pay for your equipment directly at the Stinson Beach Surf and Kayak Shop.

For Private lessons you will pay for equipment when you book on our website, and your instructor will arrive with your gear.

What is the youngest age you can take a lesson at?

We offer lessons for all ages, starting at 5 years old. However, for kids ages 5-8 you must book a private lesson.

Do I have to know how to swim to take a lesson?

If you are not a comfortable swimmer we ask that you wait to take a lesson until you have become more efficient.
